Kanungu District Council Renames Kanungu–Kerere–Hamurwa Road in Honor of Garuga

In a significant move to honor local heritage and promote regional development, the Kanungu District Council has approved the renaming of the 47-kilometer Kanungu–Kerere–Hamurwa road to "Garuga Road."

The decision was unanimously endorsed during a council session led by District LCV Chairman, Mr. Sam Kajojo Arinaitwe, and presided over by Speaker Mr. Frank Byaruhanga. The session was attended by representatives from district councils across the Kigezi and Ankole regions.

The renaming is a gesture of appreciation for Garuga’s contributions to tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure development in the Kigezi region. The road directly connects Kanungu and Rubanda districts, facilitating trade and tourism, especially to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance regional connectivity and promote local heritage.

The government has also commenced emergency rehabilitation works on flood-prone sections of the road in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda East Constituency, bringing long-awaited relief to residents and easing the transportation of goods and services.
