President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), has warned retiring generals against engaging in risky business ventures after retirement. Speaking at the retirement ceremony for seven senior army officers held at State House, Entebbe, Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to improving soldiers’ welfare.

The retirees included Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, Lt. Gen. Francis Ben Okello, Maj. Gen. Hudson Mukasa, Maj. Gen. George Igumba, Brig. Gen. John Byuma, Brig. Gen. Dominic B. Twesigomwe, and Brig. Gen. Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze.

During the ceremony, President Museveni expressed gratitude for their dedicated service and highlighted the importance of using retirement benefits wisely.

“I don’t want my generals to retire in poverty. We said since the economy has improved, now it’s time to do something about the salaries and retirement benefits of the soldiers,” Museveni said.

Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth Oboth, commended the retirees for their exemplary service and dedication, acknowledging the challenges faced during their military careers.

Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, speaking on behalf of the retirees, thanked President Museveni for his leadership and pledged to continue contributing to the nation’s development post-retirement.

The ceremony, attended by government officials, military leaders, and family members, reinforced the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of retiring military personnel.
