Speaker Declares Respect for Kadaga, Refuses to Respond to Her Attacks; Says Speaker Among
The CEC position is considered the most powerful female post in the NRM party
In the escalating battle for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) female vice chairperson position, Speaker Anita Among has chosen to maintain a dignified silence in the face of sharp criticisms from her rival, First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga.
Kadaga recently labeled Among a “thief” during an NRM delegates’ conference in Mukono, accusing her of mismanagement and corruption. She also alleged that Among was restricted by international sanctions, which purportedly hinder her ability to travel freely. Kadaga's remarks have been widely circulated on social media, sparking intense debate within the party.
In response, Speaker Among has refrained from engaging in public disputes. She emphasized her respect for Kadaga, describing her as a mentor, and stated that she would not be drawn into a war of words. Among clarified that she is not targeting Kadaga but is instead responding to a challenge for the CEC position. She also pointed out that the CEC role is crucial for linking the party with the legislature, a responsibility she is well-positioned to fulfill.
The contest has intensified political divisions within the Busoga sub-region, with some leaders rallying behind Kadaga, while others support Among. The outcome of this race is expected to have significant implications for the NRM's internal dynamics and its preparations for the 2026 general elections.
